Activate Maintenance Mode in D365 FO for Cloud Hosted, Sandbox, and Production Environments

In this blog post, I will demonstrate the process of enabling maintenance mode for cloud-hosted, Sandbox, and production environments.

Enabling maintenance mode offers a secure method for system administrators to implement system modifications that could impact its performance.

During maintenance mode, it is possible to modify license configuration and financial settings.

To enable this feature in Microsoft-managed environments such as UAT and Prod, it can be done through LCS.

However, in the case of customer-managed cloud-hosted environments, the following steps need to be performed on a virtual machine.

Activate and deactivate maintenance mode for DevTest/Demo environments.

1. Create an RDP connection to the developer's machine.

2. To access SQL Server on the developer machine, log in using the axdbadmin user credentials obtained from LCS. To proceed, switch over to the AXDB database and execute the subsequent command.

To set the value of "CONFIGURATIONMODE" parameter to 1, run the SQL command "UPDATE SQLSYSTEMVARIABLES SET VALUE = 1 WHERE PARM = 'CONFIGURATIONMODE'".

3. To reset IIS, it is necessary to restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service.

4. Upon restarting the service, the system will enter into maintenance mode..

5. After finishing the maintenance mode tasks, execute the given command.

Execute the SQL statement 'UPDATE SQLSYSTEMVARIABLES SET VALUE = 0 WHERE PARM = 'CONFIGURATIONMODE'' to update the SQL system variables.

6. To reset IIS, initiate a restart of the World Wide Web Publishing Service.

Turn maintenance mode on and off on sandbox and production environments through Lifecycle Services (LCS).

Refer to the below steps:

7. Proceed to the page displaying environment details, and from the Maintain menu, select the option to activate Maintenance Mode.

8. On the slider, choose to activate maintenance mode for the environment and then click the Confirm button.

9. A maintenance process will be initiated, and your system will enter into servicing mode

10. Once all the modifications are complete, you can disable the maintenance mode by accessing the Maintain menu and clicking on the option labeled "Disable Maintenance Mode".

11. Executing this operation will initiate a servicing process that will remove your environment from maintenance mode. The environment details page displays the current status of the operation's progress.

12. Once this process is finished, your environment will return to the Deployed state.

13. By accessing the environment history page, you can view the times when maintenance mode was activated or deactivated.

Hope this helps!
